Endometriosis

What is endometriosis and what causes it?

Endometriosis is a hormone-dependant disease that is characterised by the growth of endometrium outside of the uterus. Endometriosisisoften found in the abdominal cavity, on the ovaries and fallopian tubes, or on the intestines. Approx. 10 to 15% of women of reproductive age are affected. The main symptoms of this disease are lower abdominal pain, pain during menstruation or sexual intercourse, and infertility. Endometriosis may be caused by endometrial cells which are transported during menstruation through the fallopian tubes into the abdominal cavity and to the affected organs, where they implant.

Using a pain calendar, affected women can document their symptoms and complaints. Also, the endometriosis app can provide informations about the diet for patients with endometriosis.

What can I do if i suffer from endometriosis infertility?

Although endometriosis is a benign disease, it may lead to significant limitations concerning the quality of life. Since endometriosis often occurs together with infertility, a comprehensive gynaecological examination is essential. In some cases, a laparoscopy may be necessary to remove areas of endometriosis and assess the function of the fallopian tubes. If there is no occlusion of the fallopian tubes, it is often possible to getpregnant spontaneously. Hormone therapy can be used to support follicle growth and induce ovulation. If no pregnancy has occurred after several months, or if there is a fallopian tube blockage, then in-vitro fertilization (IVF) is possible. Studies have shown that women suffering from endometriosis have a good chance of getting pregnant using artificial insemination.
